Interview: Im Gespräch mit dem rumänischen Regisseur Claudiu Mitcu konnten wir mehr über den Kurzfilm „Love is in the Air“ (OT: „Dragostea este în aer“) erfahren, der auf dem 35. Filmfestival Cottbus 2025 mit dem Publikumspreis ausgezeichnet wurde, wie eigene Erfahrungen die Geschichte inspirierte und dass die Terminplanung herausfordernder war als der Dreh selbst.

Wie ist die Idee zu dem Kurzfilm entstanden? Wie weit stecken auch eigene Erfahrungen darin?

Die Inspiration kam aus meiner eigenen Erfahrung. Als unsere Tochter ein paar Monate alt war, buchten meine Frau und ich ein Hotel zwei Blocks von unserem Zuhause entfernt, um die Nacht zusammen zu verbringen, zum ersten Mal seit der Geburt unserer Tochter nur wir beide. Der Plan war in unseren Köpfen sehr romantisch: Wir kamen im Hotel an, gingen auf das Zimmer und sobald wir uns auf das Bett legten, schliefen wir beide innerhalb von Sekunden ein. Als wir am nächsten Morgen aufwachten, klingelte das Telefon und wir mussten nach Hause zum Baby zurückkehren, ohne auch nur das Frühstücksbuffet genießen zu können.

Wo habt ihr den Film realisiert und wie lange hattet ihr Zeit für die Realisierung?

Der Film wurde in Bukarest gedreht, wir hatten vier Drehtage – einen in einer Wohnung und drei in einem Hotel in der Nähe des Hauptbahnhofs von Bukarest.

Auf visueller Ebene ist mir ein sehr sparsamer Einsatz von Licht und auch eine gewisse Realitätsnähe aufgefallen. Was war eure visuelle Herangehensweise?

Ich finde die Geschichte selbst sehr nachvollziehbar (ich bin sicher, dass zumindest alle Paare mit Kindern alle Anspielungen verstehen), deshalb wollte ich im gesamten Film eine allgemeine Wärme schaffen, um dieses Gefühl der Vertrautheit zu unterstreichen.

Die Besetzung mit dem Real-Life-Couple ist wunderbar. Wie bist Du auf sie gekommen? Und wie gut konnten sie sich in so eine spezielle Situation hineinversetzen?

Ich kannte Ana und Alex bereits. Beide sind bekannte, großartige Schauspieler. Sie waren die erste Wahl, die mir nach dem Schreiben des Drehbuchs in den Sinn kam. Ich dachte, ein echtes Paar würde viel natürlicher wirken. Die einzige Frage war: Würden sie zusagen, da sie sich normalerweise abwechselnd um ihre beiden Kinder kümmern und arbeiten? Ich muss zugeben, dass die Terminplanung viel schwieriger war als die Dreharbeiten selbst, da wir uns mit ihren Eltern abstimmen mussten, damit diese während der Dreharbeiten und Proben auf die Kinder aufpassen konnten.

Kannst Du mir zu Dir erzählen und wie Du zum Film gekommen bist?

Ich habe Wirtschaftswissenschaften studiert, aber mein erster Job war als Redakteur beim rumänischen Fernsehsender TVR. 2017 habe ich angefangen, Dokumentarfilme zu drehen. Das erste Projekt war ein Film, den ich aus Material geschnitten habe, das ich für mich selbst als Erinnerung gedreht hatte. Es war die jährliche Messe im Dorf meiner Großeltern, das Nisipuri heißt. Ich habe drei Tage lang gedreht, alles zu einem 80-minütigen Beobachtungsfilm zusammengeschnitten, und dann haben mich Freunde, die ihn gesehen hatten, ermutigt, ihn beim Transilvania International Film Festival einzureichen, was ich auch tat. Seitdem wurde dieser Film mehr als 20 Mal auf Festivals weltweit gezeigt. Meinen ersten Auftrag als Filmemacher erhielt ich kurz darauf, als mir angeboten wurde, einen Dokumentarfilm unter der Koproduktion von HBO über Rumäniens Obdachlosen-Fußballmannschaft und ihre Teilnahme an der Obdachlosen-Fußballweltmeisterschaft in Australien zu drehen. Der Film heißt „Australia“.

Sind bereits neue Projekte geplant?

Ich habe gerade die Bearbeitung meines zweiten Spielfilms mit dem Titel „What God Thinks About Animals” abgeschlossen und arbeite derzeit an einem Dokumentarfilm über einen sehr erfolgreichen rumänischen Schriftsteller, der in Lausanne lebt und dort veröffentlicht und außerdem als Busfahrer arbeitet.

Interview: In our conversation with Romanian director Claudiu Mitcu, we learned more about the short film „Love is in the Air“ (original title: „Dragostea este în aer“), which won the Audience Award at the 35th Cottbus Film Festival 2025, how his own experiences inspired the story, and that scheduling was more challenging than the actual filming.

How did the idea for the short film come about? To what extent does it include your own experiences?

The inspiration actually came from my own experience. When our daughter was a few months old, my wife and I booked a hotel two blocks away from our home to spend  the night together, just the two of us for the first time since our daughter was born. The plan was very romantic in our heads, we got to the hotel, went into the room, and the minute we laid on the bed we both fell asleep in seconds. We woke up in the morning, the phone was ringing to get back home to the baby, and didn’t even get to eat buffet breakfast.

Where did you make the film and how long did you have to realize it?

The film was shot in Bucharest, we had 4 shooting days- one in an apartment and 3 in a hotel near the main train station in Bucharest.

I find the story itself very relatable (I’m sure at least all couples with children understand all references), so I wanted to create an overall warmness throughout  the film to compliment that feeling of familiarity.

The cast with the real-life couple is wonderful. How did you find them? And how well were they able to put themselves in such a special situation?

I knew Ana and Alex, they are both well known great actors. They were the first option that popped into mind after writing the script, I thought a real couple would feel much more natural, the only question was – are they going to say yes, as they usually take turns working and taking care of their 2 children? And I will admit the schedule was far more difficult to make than the actual shooting, as we had to synchronise with their parents to babysit for them while filming and rehearsing.

Can you tell me about yourself and how you came to the movie?  

I have economic studies, but my first job was as an editor at the Romanian Television Channel- TVR. I first started directing documentaries in 2017. The first project was a film I edited out of a material I shot for myself to have as a memory. It was the annual fair in my grandparent’s village, called Nisipuri. I shot for 3 days, edited everything into a 80 min observational film, then friends who saw it encouraged me to send it to Transilvania International Film Festival, which I did, and from then on, this film had more than 20 screenings at festivals worldwide. The first job I got as a film maker was soon after that, when I received a proposal to direct a documentary co-produced by HBO, about Romania’s homeless football team and their participation in The Homeless Football World Championship, in Australia (the film is called „Australia“). 

Are there any new projects planned? 

I just finished editing my second feature film called „What God Thinks About Animals“, and I am currently working on a documentary about a very successful Romanian writer that lives and publishes in Lausanne that is also a bus driver there.
