Interview: Der polnische Filmemacher Michał Hytroś erzählt, wie er die Geschichte für seinen ersten Kurzfilm „The Sisters“ fand, was es mit seiner Vergangenheit zu tun hat und wie er zum Thema Religion steht.

Auf dem DOK Leipzig lief Dein Film „The Sisters“ – ein wunderbares Portrait eines Nonnenklosters und seinen Bewohnerinnen. Wie kamst Du auf die Idee Deines Kurzfilms?
Mit diesem Film war es eine lange Reise. Das Kloster ist im Dorf, aus dem ich komme. Mein Dorf ist typisch und klein, nichts Außergewöhnliches, außer dem Kloster. Ich wuchs im Dorf auf und hörte immer viel über das Kloster. Dann verließ ich mein Zuhause und ging nach Warschau, um mein Studium zu beginnen. Als ich mich vorstellte und sagte, woher ich komme, sagten alle: „Oh, da ist dieses Kloster!“ Das Kloster war eine Art Fluch für mich. Ich wuchs auch in einer katholischen Familie auf, nachdem ich von zu Hause weggegangen war, änderte sich etwas in meinem Kopf, ich war kein Kind mehr, niemand konnte mich zwingen, etwas zu tun oder an etwas zu glauben. Ich spürte, dass mein ganzer Glaube auf katholischer Erziehung und auch auf der Angst vor Einsamkeit beruhte. Ich begann zu denken, dass ich das ändern muss und zu dieser Zeit begann die Rebellion gegen jede Religion in meinem Leben.
Als ich die Aufnahmeprüfung für die Filmschule bestand, war es Pflicht, einen kurzen Dokumentarfilm zu machen. Ich war auf der Suche nach einem Thema, das mich interessiert. Ich bin viele Themen durchgegangen, wollte aber keinen Film über das Kloster machen, weil ich dachte, dass es sich nicht lohnt, und auch wegen meiner Einstellung zur Religion damals. Eine meiner Professorinnen sagte, als sie einige Videomaterialien aus dem Kloster sah, dass es großartig sei, und ich sollte darüber nachdenken. Ich sagte, dass ich Probleme mit diesem Ort habe, aber sie antwortete: „Also ist es ein guter Grund, dorthin zurückzukehren und diese Geschichte zu erzählen. Beheben Sie das Problem.“ Und es war, als würde die Reise beginnen. Ich ging ins Kloster, um einige Dinge aus meiner Kindheit zu reparieren und auch die Antwort zu finden, warum im 21. Jahrhundert noch jemand so leben will.
War es schwierig, die Bewohner des Klosters von Deinem Filmprojekt zu überzeugen?
Das kommt darauf an. Es gab anfänglich Probleme hineinzukommen. Wir brauchten viele Genehmigungen, aber dann waren sie sehr offen und neugierig. Sie wollten gerne Zeit mit mir und dem Kameramann Janusz Szymański verbringen. Wir fühlten uns bei ihnen wohl. Ich denke, wir waren so eine Art Attraktion für sie. Wenn man 50 Jahre lang geschlossen hinter der Mauer lebt, ist es wie ein Hauch von frischer Luft, wenn man jemanden neuen von der Außenwelt trifft. Wir waren neugierig auf ihre Vergangenheit, sie waren neugierig auf unsere Zukunft und das, was vor uns liegt, und wir treffen uns irgendwo in der Mitte – in der Gegenwart. Und der Film ist der Resultat dieses Treffens.
Wie muss ich mir die Dreharbeiten dazu vorstellen? Wie hast Du es geschafft so nah an sie heranzukommen, ohne dass sie ihr natürliches Verhalten aufgeben?
Um ehrlich zu sein, waren die Schwestern manchmal besser als professionelle Schauspielerinnen. Sie hatten kein Problem mit der Kamera. Sie baten uns sogar manchmal, etwas zu drehen, und suchten nach einem guten Ort für schöne Bilder. Aber die wichtigste Zeit der Arbeit an diesem Projekt war die Zeit, in der die Kamera ausgeschaltet war. Die Zeit, die wir zuvor mit ihnen verbracht haben, erlaubte es uns, eine Beziehung zu den Schwestern aufzubauen. Erlaubte uns auch, das Vertrauen aufzubauen, und dass sie sehr ruhig und entspannt mit uns waren. Am Anfang waren sie skeptisch gegenüber dem Film, aber dann glaubten sie, dass wir sie nicht negativ zeigen wollen. Und ich denke, das war das Wichtigste, weshalb die Schwestern so offen waren und uns ihr Leben von allen Seiten zeigten.
Gibt es in Polen noch viele Kloster, die aktiv betrieben werden – ist das ein elementarer Bestandteil im Leben, dort um Segen etc. zu bitten?
Es gibt viele Klöster in Polen. Aber die Minderheit von ihnen ist so geschlossen. Es handelt sich um das älteste geschlossene Kloster Polens, das 800 Jahre lang besteht. Trotz Kriegszeiten und anderen Problemen überlebten sie, und sie waren immer als Gemeinschaft zusammen. Aber die Klöster wie dieses spüren heute den Mangel an jungen Menschen, die sich für ein solches Leben entscheiden. Und es ist nicht verwunderlich, wenn wir sehen, dass wir in hektischen Zeiten leben. Um ehrlich zu sein, verstehe ich auch nicht ihre Lebensentscheidungen, die sie ins Kloster gebracht haben. Ich habe versucht zu verstehen, aber es ist immer noch zu schwierig für mich. Dennoch kann ich den von ihnen gewählten Weg akzeptieren.
Es ist üblich, dass Menschen um Gebete und Segen bitten. Schwestern werden niemals Anfragen von Menschen ablehnen, die zu ihnen kommen.
Aber es gibt in Polen ein gewisses Problem mit der Kommerzialisierung in der Welt der Religion. Die meisten Menschen in Polen sind Katholiken und sie sind sehr gläubig, leider manchmal zu viel und die Religion wird zu einer leeren Parodie. Natürlich gibt es auch Gläubige, die eine starke Grundlage ihres Glaubens haben, und sie lehnen all das Lächerliche, was auf Geld basiert, ab.
Kannst Du mir zum Schluss bisschen mehr von Dir erzählen und welche Projekte Du als Nächstes geplant hast?
Ich habe bisher Schauspielerei an der Nationalen Akademie für Schauspielkunst in Warschau studiert. Jetzt studiere ich Regie an der Filmhochschule Łódź. Ich arbeite derzeit an vier Projekten. Eins ist eine kurze Animation, die nächsten beiden sind Dokumentationen – eine über einen der größten Schauspieler Polens, der jetzt mit seiner Krankheit zu kämpfen hat, die ihm seine Fähigkeit zu sprechen nahm. Der zweite dreht sich um einen jungen Mann, der sich entschieden hat, einen außergewöhnlichen spirituellen Weg in seinem Leben zu gehen. Und der letzte ist ein Spielfilm in voller Länge – eine dunkle Komödie, die wir in diesem Jahr drehen werden.

Interview: The Polish filmmaker Michał Hytroś tells how he found the story for his first short film “The Sisters“, what it has to do with his past and how he relates to religion.
Your film “The Sisters” was shown at the DOK Leipzig – a wonderful portrait of a nunnery and its inhabitants. How did you come up with the idea for your short film?
o it was a long journey with this film. The nunnery is in village I come from. My village is typical and small, nothing extraordinary, except the monastery. I was growing up there and always heard a lot about the monastery. And then I left my home to go to Warsaw to start my studies. When I was introducing myself, telling where I come from, everybody said : “Oh, there is this monastery!” The monastery was kind of my curse. I also grew up in a catholic family and after I left home, something changed in my mind, I wasn’t child anymore, nobody could force me to do something or believe in something. I felt that my whole faith was based on my catholic upbringing and also a fear of loneliness. I started thinking that I have to change it and the time of rebellion against any religion started in my life.
When I passed the entrance exams to film school I was obligated to make a short documentary. I was looking for the topic which will concern me. I checked a lot of topics, but didn’t want to make a film about monastery because I thought it wasn’t worth it, and also because of my attitude to religion then. One of my professors said, when she saw some video materials from the monastery, that it was great and I should think about it. I said that I had problem with this place but she answered: So it’s a good reason to go back there and tell this story. Fix the problem. And it was like the journey starts. I went to the monastery to fix some stuff from my childhood and also find the answer why in the 21st century still someone wants to live like that.
Was it difficult for the monastery to get involved?
It depends. There was a problem to get in. We needed lots of permissions, but then we found them very open and curious of us. They wanted to spend time with me and the cinematographer – Janusz Szymański. We felt a good vibe with them. I think it was also a thing that we were kind of an attraction for them. When you live for 50 years closed behind the wall it is like a breath of fresh air when you meet someone new, from the outside world. I think that we were curious of their past, they were curious of our future and what is before us, and we meet somewhere in the middle – in the present. And the film is the effect of this meeting.
How do I have to imagine shooting it? How did you manage to get so close to them without them giving up their natural behaviour?
To be honest the sisters were better than even professional actresses sometimes. They didn’t have problem with the camera. They even sometimes asked us to shoot something, and were looking for a good place for nice picture. But the most important time of working on this project was the time when the camera was switched off. The time which we spend with them before allowed us to build a relationship with the sisters. Allowed us also to build the trust, and for them to be very calm and relaxed with us. At the beginning they were skeptical about the film, but then they believed that we don’t want to show them in the negative way. And I think it was the most important thing because of which the sisters were so open and showed us their life from every side.
Are there still many active monasteries in Poland – is this an elementary part of life to ask for blessings etc.?
There are lots of monasteries in Poland. But the minority of them are so closed. This is the oldest closed nunnery in Poland, it runs for 800 years. Despite war times and other problems they survived, and they were always together as a community. But the monasteries like this feel today the lack of young people who decide to go for life like this. And it is not surprising, when we see that we live in times of rush and development. To be honest I also don’t understand their life decisions which brought them to the monastery. I tried to understand, but it is still too difficult for me. Nevertheless I can accept the path they chose.
It is common that people asked for praying for them and blessings. Sisters will never refuse requests of people coming to them.
But there is kind of a problem in Poland with commercialization in the world of religion. Most of the people in Poland are catholic and they are very into their faith, unfortunately sometimes too much and the religion becomes an empty parody. Of course there are also believers who have a strong foundation of their faith and they reject all the simpering of this type of the religion which is based on money.
Can you tell me a little bit more about yourself and which projects you have planned next?
I graduated from National Academy of Dramatic Art in Warsaw – acting. Now I study directing in Lodz Film School. I am working on four projects now. One is a short animation, the next two are documentaries – one about one of the greatest actor in Poland who now has to fight with his illness which took from him his ability to speak. The second one is focused on a young man who decided to choose an extraordinary spiritual path in his life. And the last one is a full length fiction film – a dark comedy, which we will be shooting this year.
