Interview: Im Gespräch mit dem japanischen Filmemacher Shota Shimizu konnten wir mehr über seinen überdrehten Kurzfilm „Good Luck Yonpey“, gesehen im ‚Internationalen Programm‘ des 32. Filmfest Dresden, den dahinter stehenden Ideen und warum er viele verschiedene Animationsstil in dem nur vierminütigen Werk vereint erfahren.

Aus welcher Idee heraus ist Dein Kurzfilm „Good Luck Yonpey“ entstanden?

Ich habe fantastische Ideen schon immer geliebt, seit ich klein war. Ohne so viel nachzudenken, und nahe an meinen Kindheitsfantasien, werden in diesem Film intuitive Ideen verwendet.

Erzähl mir bitte mehr zur Entstehung – ist der Film als Uniprojekt entstanden? Wie lange hast Du zur Umsetzung gebraucht?

Dieser Film ist eine Abschlussarbeit für meinen Master-Abschluss an der Universität Tokio Zokei (Tokio Universität für Kunst und Design). Es dauerte über ein Jahr, um ihn einschließlich des Konzepts fertigzustellen.

Ich möchte unbedingt mehr über die Animationen erfahren – Du spielst darin ja auch mit verschiedenen Stilen, richtig? Was war Dir auf visueller Ebene wichtig?

Dieser Film ist beeinflusst vom japanischen Manga, den ich seit meiner Kindheit mag, und von Packungsillustrationen japanischer Billig-Süßigkeiten. Ich dachte, das sei nicht genug, also wurde er auch durch Verweise auf das psychedelische Genre, Kinderkritzelzeichnungen und viele Bilder gemacht. Wie auch immer, es ist wichtig, das Publikum zu überraschen und zu unterhalten. Tiefe Botschaften werden absichtlich unterdrückt. Ich möchte Filme machen, unabhängig von Alter, Nationalität und Geschlecht. Das macht nicht nur Spaß, sondern beinhaltet auch dunkle Elemente.

Kannst Du mir am Schluss noch ein bisschen von Dir erzählen und ob bereits neue Projekte geplant sind?

Ich habe 2018 meinen Master-Abschluss an der Tokyo Zokei University gemacht. Zurzeit arbeite ich für eine Filmproduktionsfirma, die Fernsehprogramme für Kinder produziert.

Im Moment mache ich keinen neuen Film. Aber ich verbinde die Fähigkeiten, die ich in „Good Luck Yonpey“ erworben habe, mit meiner Arbeit. MV [Anm. d. Red. Musikvideos] , CM [Anm. d. Red. Werbung (Commercials)] und TV-Serien werden jetzt angefragt.

Interview: In conversation with the Japanese filmmaker Shota Shimizu we could learn more about his over-the-top short film “Good Luck Yonpey“, seen in the ‘International Program’ of the 32nd Filmfest Dresden, the ideas behind it and why he combines many different animation styles in this just four minutes long film. 

What was the idea behind your short film “Good Luck Yonpey“?

I’ve always loved fantasy since I was little. Without thinking so much, and, close to my childhood fantasies, intuitive ideas are used in this film.

Please tell me more about the making of it – was it a university project? How long did it take you to realize it?

This film is a graduation work: Master’s Degree in Tokyo Zokei university (Tokyo University of Art and Design). It took over 1 year to complete, including the concept.

I would like to know more about the animations – you play with different styles, right? What was important to you on a visual level?

This film is influenced by Japanese Manga that I have liked since I was little, and package illustrations of Japanese cheap candy. I thought that was not enough, so it was also made by getting a hint from psychedelic genre, children scribble drawings, and a lot of pictures. Anyway, it ’s important to surprise and entertain the audience. Deep messages are intentionally suppressed. I want to make films regardless of age, nationality and gender. It’s not just fun, it also incorporates dark elements.

Can you tell me a little bit about yourself at the end and if new projects are already planned?

I graduated with a Master Degree in Tokyo Zokei University, in 2018. Currently I work for a film production company that produces TV programs for children.

I’m not making a new film right now. However, I’m connecting the abilities I gained in “Good Luck Yonpey” to my work. MV [note: music videos], CM [note. commercials] and TV series are being requested now.
