Wie kamst Du auf die Idee für Deinen zweiten Kurzfilm „Five Steps to the Right“? Hat es was mit der neuen Fitness-Welle zutun?
Die Idee von „Five Steps to the Right“ wurde ursprünglich durch eine große Menge an Frustration ausgelöst. Es war ein unruhiger Moment, der mich in einen Klumpen Elend verwandelte. Das Projekt half mir, den Ausgang zu finden – durch Bewegung und Vorstellungskraft! Außerdem habe ich auf die traditionelle Methode des Storyboards in diesem Film verzichtet und mehr Improvisation erlaubt. Es hat Spaß gemacht! Ich bin seit Jahrzehnten über mein eigenes Fett verärgert, aber gleichzeitig spiele ich sehr gerne mit meinem weichen Fleisch und meiner Saftigkeit.
Der Stil Deines zweiten Films unterscheidet sich von „Muteum“, Deinem ersten Kurzfilm. Wie kam es, dass Du komplett auf Farbe verzichtet hast.
Du wurdest beim Filmfest Dresden für den Filmton-Preis nominiert. Warum sticht Dein Ton so raus?
Als wir uns das letzte Mal unterhalten haben, fühltest Du Dich noch nicht so richtig entwickelt als Filmemacherin. Wie fühlst Du Dich jetzt?
Werden wir Dich im nächsten Jahr wieder auf dem Filmfest Dresden sehen?

Interview: In our second interview with Hong Kong-born filmmaker Äggie Pak-Yee Lee, we learned more about her second short film “Five Steps to the Right” (after “Muteum“), which was shown at the 31st Filmfest Dresden, why she chose a different animation style and how she has fared since then.
How did you come up with the idea for your second short film “Five Steps to the Right“? Did you have anything to do with the somehow always new and current fitness wave?
The idea of “Five Steps to the Right” was originally triggered by an extensive amount of frustration. It was an edgy moment that I transformed into a lump of misery. The project helped me to find the exit – by exercises and imagination! Also, I ditched the traditional method of storyboarding in this film, but allowed more improvisation. It was fun! I have been annoyed by my own fat for decades, but at the same time I really enjoy playing with my soft meat and juiciness.
The style of your second film is different from “Muteum“. How did it happen that you completely abandoned color?
It’s a naked film, so I decided to let it all the way down – no color, no polishing and no layers. I had tried out many different visual styles for “Five Steps to the Right“. All of them looked very well-crafted. Later I doubted, “how dare you wearing clothes in a sauna?” I think sketches have their own magical power – communicating with people directly from our mind.
You were nominated for the sound award at the Filmfest Dresden. Why does your sound stand out so much?
The sound nomination of Five Steps was unexpected. The first reason might be – the committee jury has really good taste. Heeeheee. Interestingly when I was directing the soundscape, my sound designer told me bluntly, “I think it doesn’t work”. Then, most of the sound and voice over were made by me on my iphone. Now, after knowing I got the nomination, my heart screamed like a lion “Yeees!”. The second reason for the good sound might be – the speakers in the theatre venues were very good. Also, I guess the festival team did a great job in monitoring the screening quality, too.
The last time we talked you didn’t feel properly developed as a filmmaker. How do you feel now?
I am still a potato, trying to make something, next after next. I tried not to think too much about who I am, but sometimes I need a title for people to categorize me quicker and give me opportunities. If I keep rolling, then I think identities will follow after me. When I was a child, I thought I would be a nun or a beggar, now I think being an artist or filmmaker is a perfect golden middle.
Will we see you again next year at the Filmfest Dresden?
I would love to attend Filmfest Dresden again, if I am lucky enough! I enjoyed so much the Q&A session with Dresden’s audience and the whole festival’s atmosphere. But I don’t think my new film will be ready yet next year. I would like to take some time to absorb the world a bit longer and deeper before the next. Right now I am making an experimental film – just to remind myself the joy of playing and the room of spontaneity.
